Cervical Screening
Protecting Your Health
While the "Pap smear" is a thing of the past, its legacy lives on in the modern Cervical Screening Test (CST). Since 2017, this more advanced test has changed how we protect women and people with a cervix from cancer.
How the CST Works
The modern CST is more sensitive than the old Pap smear. Instead of just looking at cells, it tests for HPV (Human Papillomavirus)—the virus that causes almost all cervical cancers.
If HPV is not found: You only need to be screened every 5 years.
If HPV is found: We check the sample for cell changes. A positive HPV result does not mean you have cancer; it simply means we need to monitor you more closely or arrange further testing.
Who Should Be Screened?
If you have a cervix, are aged 25 to 74, and have ever been sexually active (including skin-to-skin contact), screening is recommended.
Your first CST: Usually due 2 years after your last Pap smear.
Timing: For the best sample, try to book your appointment for a time when you are not on your period.
Why Screening Matters
Australia is a world leader in cervical cancer prevention. While the HPV Vaccine is a homegrown success story, it doesn't protect against all types of the virus. Regular screening remains your best defense.
The Facts:
80% of cervical cancers occur in people who have never been screened or are overdue.
Most HPV infections clear up on their own without treatment.
Early detection via the CST can prevent cancer before it starts.
